To Podcasts, With Love
Some very scientific charts and graphs, finally understanding Eurovision, creepy crawly critters, and lots of podcasts and links to make you think.
Welcome to Hurt Your Brain #197, the place to get podcasts and links that will make you think, sent every other Sunday.
I published a few new articles you can find below that I hope you like, including some very, very scientific charts and graphs about podcasting.
Note: I usually link to pod.link but the site was going incredibly slow, so today you’ll find only the direct links to episodes on their website.
PODCAST RECOMMENDATIONS
The Allusionist: Eurovision part 1, and part 2
The Big Idea: I hear about Eurovision all the time, but I honestly couldn’t have told you how old it is or even really a damn thing about it. Now I know it’s almost 80 years old and has a dramatic and flip floppy relationship to its language requirements, which is why the whole subject is perfect for Helen Zaltman’s The Allusionist. This episode is both a great primer of what Eurovision is (perfect for an ignorant person like me) and a fascinating exploration around how language and language requirements have shaped it.

Outside/In: The secret lives of bugs
The Big Idea: Find out the answers to what happens inside a chrysalis, how bioluminescence works, and if mosquitoes are good for anything.
Here’s nice little creepy factoid I learned: female fruit flies can lay up to 100 eggs a day and within a week of hatching they are full fledged adults ready to reproduce. Have fun with that piece of information, particularly when eating bananas in the summer.
The Last Archive: The Farming Game
The Big Idea: The Farming Game is a decades old popular tabletop board game that uses the stressful economics of farming as its premise.
The origin of this game is fascinating and is about as far away as you can imagine from executives in corporate boardrooms thinking up ideas.
Episode roundup: Here are some excellent recent episodes from shows I recommend frequently. I hope you trust my taste enough to simply click and listen. You won’t be disappointed.
